Who are we?

JACQUELINE ANN SURIN [L-R] began her career as a journalist in 1994 with The Star newspaper. In 2003, she joined The Edge as a business and economic writer.She began writing for sister publication theSun from 2004 until 2008, when The Edge and theSun managements decoupled following a corporate restructuring. Jacqueline was assistant news editor from 2006 until she resigned in 2008.

In 2007, she won the Excellence in Opinion Writing Award from the Society of Publishers in Asia for her Shape of a Pocket column in theSun. She was also named by London-based Article 19 as the Pioneering Women’s Voices Candidate for Malaysia in commemoration of International Women’s Day in 2007.

She has a B.A. from Universiti Malaya, and gained an M.A. in Media Studies at Sussex University, England as a Chevening scholar. In 2001/2002, she studied journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park in the U.S. under the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship.

In her spare time, she has exhibited and sold art work in Selangor; and performed in two Five Arts Centre productions, Family and Bunga Manggar, Bunga Raya.

DANNY LIM has been a feature writer and photographer since 1999 with theSun, The Edge and Men’s Review. He was until January, 2008 senior writer for Off The Edge magazine. In 2007, he won the Honourable Mention for Excellence in Feature Photography from the Society of Publishers in Asia for his feature “Ronggeng Revolusioner” in Off The Edge.

He has also contributed writing and photography to various local and international media including Malaysiakini, the Far Eastern Economic Review and The Sunday Times (UK). His photographic credits include work used in the museum calendar of The Smithsonian Institute, the coffee table book The Chronicle of Malaysia, two joint art and photo exhibitions, and shooting stills for various local indie films.

In 2004, he produced and directed the video 18? which won Best Short Documentary at the 2005 Malaysian Video Awards, Runner-up for Best Documentary at the 2005 Freedom Film Fest and which has been screened at various international film festivals in Hannover, Jakarta, Jogjakarta, Singapore and Taiwan. He was one of the authors of the Malay anthology Wilayah Kutu.

CINDY THAM cut her teeth in journalism as a cadet reporter in theSun in 1995 and eventually focused on current issues and news analysis. She joined The Edge Malaysia in 2001 as a senior writer for the Survey and Guide section and economics page. She also contributed to other publications, namely The Edge Singapore, Asia Inc and theSun.

In 2005, she worked with The Edge Financial Daily as assistant editor. She was seconded to theSun the following year as assistant news editor and returned to The Edge in early 2008, after which she resigned to be part of MalaysiaVotes.com.

She has a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Alberta, Canada and an M.A. in Postcolonial Literature from Universiti Malaya.
